Based on the survey, your patient’s asthma condition is:

MILD PERSISTENT

Care Recommendations:

Start low-dose inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) (e.g., Flovent 44)
OR
Start leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA)
OR
Increase ICS dose (if already on ICS)
OR
Add LABA or LTRA (if already on ICS)

Low-dose ICS Options (4puffs qD or 2p BID):
QVAR 80
OR
Pulmicort DPI 90
OR
Pulmicort nebs qD (0.25mg or 0.5mg)
OR
Asmanex HFA 100
OR
DPI Twisthaler 110

2 puffs twice a day with spacer

LTRA = Montelukast (4mg for <6 years old; 5mg for 6 – 14 years old; 10mg for 15+ years old)
DPI = dry-powdered inhaler

AND

Albuterol 4 times a day until symptoms resolved

Follow-up asthma visit in 2 – 6 weeks

NOTE

Weaning of daily controller medications is not suggested during high risk periods of respiratory virus transmission (e.g., during the winter season)
